The Faculty of Biology of Yerevan State University has been established in 1933. Currently, the Faculty is the main educational center in Armenia to train high-quality specialists in various fields of Biology. At present, the Faculty consists of 7 Departments and Biology Scientific Research Institute.  Two scientific-educational centers, namely Center of Excellency of Applied Biology and Novel Center of Microbiological Biotechnologies and Biofuel also operate at the Faculty. The training of specialists was carried out in following Departments: Department of Botany and Mycology, Department of Zoology, Department of Human and Animal Physiology, Department of Ecology and Nature Protection, Department of Genetics and Cytology, Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology and Department of Biophysics.

Nine research laboratories function within the Biology Scientific Research Institute. The main research trends concern the Molecular and Cellular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, General and Medical Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology, Applied Microbiology, General and Molecular Genetics, General and Applied Physiology, Mycology and Botany, Zoology and Parasitology, Ecology and Environment Protection. The Faculty has a rather honorable staff: two Corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, 18 Doctors of Sciences and more than 70 PhDs. A number of graduates of the Faculty are internationally famous scientists who used to work or work at scientific centers of the former Soviet Union and other foreign countries. Well-known specialists of the Faculty work successfully in scientific cooperation with their colleagues from various scientific centers of USA, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russian Federation through series of lectures and scientific reports.

Three-level educational cycle is currently carried out at the Faculty of Biology: bachelor’s level (4-year study), master’s level (2-year study) and PhD level (3 or 4 years of study depending on the form of study, either full-time or part-time). The education cycle is being implemented for three specialties, namely «Biology», «Biochemistry and Biotechnology», «Biophysics and Bioinformatics».

At present there are more than 500 students at the Faculty, out of which 370 are bachelors, and 130 are master students, while the total number of PhD students is around 20. At Bachelors level the theoretical knowledge taught is being supported by practical field work in Tsaghkadzor and at Marmarik student camps in Kotayk region of Armenia, as well as during the laboratory research at various Departments of the Faculty. A pedagogical practical work at secondary schools of Yerevan is part of educational curriculum at the last year of Bachelors program.

The applicants to the Faculty should pass the first entrance examination on Biology for three specialties («Biology», «Biochemistry and Biotechnology», «Biophysics and Bioinformatics»),  while the second examination is either Physics or Chemistry.

The Faculty provides master-degree programs for 10 specializations, namely «Medical Mycology and Applied Botany», «Zoology and Parasitology», «General and Medical Biochemistry», «Microbiology and Biotechnology», «Applied Microbiology», «General and Molecular Genetics», «Fundamental and Applied Physiology», «Ecology and Bioresources Management», «Biophysics», «Bioinformatics».
