The Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development was established on July 6, 2017 by the decision of YSU Academic Council and with the order of YSU Rector Aram Simonyan No. 133.46 of July 19, 2017.
The Center was formed on the basis of the Department of Education of YSU.
Department of Education is one of the oldest departments of YSU. In October 1921, it was created just after the foundation of the university together with the establishment of the Faculty of Pedagogy, and from 1924 till July 2017,
Department of Education part of the Faculty of Armenian Philology of YSU.
Since 19th July, 2017, the Department of Education has been separated from the Faculty of Armenian Philology by forming the Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development.
The Head of Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development, as well as the Department of Education is Professor N. Harutyunyan
who has been leading the scientific and educational activities of the chair for already 25 years. For his great scientific contribution to the development of pedagogy, Professor N. Harutyunyan has repeatedly been awarded state awards (2009: "Commemorative Medal" of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia; January 2014: "Commemorative Medal" of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia; September 2014: "Honored Pedagogue" award by the President of the Republic of Armenia; 2016: YSU Gold Medal; 2016: "Honored Pedagogue of Yerevan").
The Center carries out three professional educational programs, as well as organizes and supervises Pedagogue's New Qualification System in 12 faculties of YSU:
- "Social Pedagogy" educational program in BA Level.
In 2010-2011, the Department of Education opened the "Social Pedagogy" educational program at the Bachelor's level. Social pedagogues are preparing for the public education schools of the Republic of Armenia.
- "Education Management" educational program in MA Level.
For the first time in 1998, the Master's program “Education Management" was launched at Yerevan State University, the purpose of which is to train education organizers for public education and higher education in Armenia.
- "School Pedagogy and Methodics" educational program in MA Level (distance learning).
Since 2016, Department of Education has launched the "School Pedagogy and Methodics" Master's program in distance learning, the purpose of which is to train pedagogues for public schools in the Republic of Armenia, giving qualification of pedagogue.
- The Pedagogue's New Qualification System.
The new system of pedagogical qualification awarding is available from academic year 2017-2018, which implies organization of a separate 3-year educational module in 12 faculties of YSU. Students will receive a qualification of a pedagogue /teacher/ in case of accumulation of appropriate credits (30 credits).A great number of research projects are implemented in the Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development, with more than 300 published works in the last 20 years (monographs, textbooks, university manuals, pedagogical three-volume encyclopedias, scientific articles). Over the last 10 years 3 doctoral and 19 candidate dissertations have been defended in the center.
Since 5 years, Specialized Council of Pedagogy awarding Scientific Degrees - 058 is dealing in the Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development, where Ph.D. thesis are defended by Ph.D. Students not only from the Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development, different universities of Armenia, but also from the Islamic Republic of Iran (6 candidates of sciences).
The Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development has a wide range of international collaborations covering both European universities and leading universities in the region (Austria, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Islamic Republic of Iran).
It is noteworthy that since 2014, the Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development is a member of the European Educational Research Association (EERA).
The Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development of Yerevan State University has a rich experience in the organization of international conferences and roundtables (1997, 2004, 2014, 2017 and 2019).
The Centre of Pedagogy and Education Development has a Student Council and Student Scientific Society, which actively cooperate with the University Student Council and the SSS, organizing Center and Inter-faculty student events.
