The Department of Education of Yerevan State University is one of the oldest departments of the University. The Department was founded in 1921 by the initiative and efforts of talented academics. Reknown professors G. Edilyan, A. Shavarshyan, M. Santrosyan, A. Movsisyan, Hr. Karamyan, T. Juharyan, H. Makhchanyan, Associate Professors A. Ignatyan, S. Khudoyan, Al. Manukyan, P. Hurikhanyan, T.Balasanyan, and L. Aleksanyan have mightily contributed to the establishment and development of the department and the educational management.
The Head of the Department Prof. Dr. N. Harutyunyan, Associate Professors T. Harutyunyan, G. Babayan, V. Gyulbudaghyan, A. Ghazarian, A. Grigoryan, A. Ashikyan, A. Aleksanyan Assistant Professors M. Avetisyan, L. Hayrapetyan and others continue to put a considerable effort to preserve the values established by the founders of the department.
Since 1996 up to present Prof.Dr. Nazik Harutyunyan is the head of Department of Education of YSU.
The Department today also has an important contribution to the University's scientific, educational and educational activities, directing the study and development of branches of pedagogy, as well as preparing education managers and social pedagogues.
In 1998, Master’s Course in Education Management was founded as a major under the tutorial of the department. This was aimed at preparing specialists both for secondary and higher education not only for the schools in Armenia, but also for the ones of the Armenian Diaspora.
In 2010, the Department of Education founded its second study project as a bachelor‘s course with specialization in Social Pedagogy.
Since 2016, the Department of Education has launched the "School Pedagogy and Methodics" Master's program in distance learning, which aims to train pedagogues for schools, giving the qualification of a teacher.
In 2017 - 2018, the Department of Education coordinates and monitors the Pedagogue's New Qualification System, which implies organizing a separate module so that the students of 14 faculties of YSU get a qualification as well as after gaining appropriate amounts of credit (30 credits).
Effective professional activity within the educational processes is not the only task of the Department of Education. It has also been engaged in a vast number of research projects relating to most various areas of pedagogy. Monographs, university manuals, school textbooks, teachers' methodological manuals, pedagogical encyclopedia (A, B), more than 1000 scientific articles were published by the lecturers of the chair.
The staff of the department have been actively participating in a number of international conferences such as in Hungary, 2000; in Lebanon, 2003; in USA, 2005; in London, 2009; in Germany, 2011; in Spain, 2012; Germany, 2014; Austria, 2015; Moscow, 2017; Denmark; 2017.
Since 2011, the Department has been a member of the European Educational Research Association, participating in EERA’s annual conferences, and Associate Professor of the Department, Ph.D. Anna Aleksanyan is a member of the EERA Council.
Young professionals not only from Armenia, but also from Iran are doing their research studies at The Department of Education, YSU. The Department collaborates with international organizations, foreign embassies in Armenia, participating in their educational programs.
The lecturing staff as well as the alumni of the Department of Education of Yerevan State University having a high rating and being a torch-bearer of Science and have always kept in pace with time.
