The Chair of Biomedicine of the Institute of Pharmacy of YSU was established in 2017 on the basis of the Department of Pharmacology which was functioning at the Faculty of Pharmacology and Chemistry of YSU.

The following main specialties are instructed in the Chair of Biomedicine: “Pathological Physiology”, “Basics of Pharmacology”, “Clinical Pharmacology”, “General Hygiene” and “Basics of Evidence-Based Medicine”. It is planned to organize the following courses: “Bioethics”, “Pharmaceutical Care”. The educational activities of the Chair are aimed at organizing the courses necessary for the preparation of a pharmacist with high professional knowledge, abilities and skills in line with modern requirements.

The Chair of Biomedicine of YSU cooperates with L.A. Orbeli Institute of Physiology of NAS RA, “ASTGHIK” Medical Center, the Republican Medical Library of the Ministry of Health of RA and other medical and research institutions.

The Chair of Pharmtechnology and Pharmacy Economics and Management (PEM) of YSU was established in 2015 on the basis of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry which was functioning at the Faculty of Chemistry of YSU in 1998.

Lectures on some courses, laboratory and practical activities implemented for the specialty of “Pharmacy” of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes of YSU Pharmacy Institute are handled by the Chair of Pharmtechnology and PEM. The Chair handles the lectures on the following main specialties: drug manufacturing technology (drugstore and industrial), pharmacy economics and management, good manufacturing practice, pharmaceutical planning and prediction, management, etc. Some courses are held by distance learning at the Chair, which enables a student to contact directly with the leading pharmaceutical companies, get acquainted with marketing programs, assortment of medicines registered in the RA and promotes a student to become a specialist with high demand in the future.

The Chair is also installed with the necessary laboratories and modern equipment, which enable to provide high-quality and educational activities in line with modern requirements.

The Chair organizes professional industrial internships in the leading drugstores of Armenia (8 weeks) and pharmaceutical factories: “Yerevan chemical-pharmaceutical firm” OJSC and Abovyan “Arpimed” LLC (8 weeks). Some specialized courses of the Chair are being held at different scientific and research institutes of Armenia: the Scientific and Production Center “Armbiotechnology” of NAS RA and “Liqvor” Pharmaceuticals. Such cooperation allows to conduct educational activities at the Chair of Pharmtechnology and PEM of YSU in line with modern requirements.

The academic staff of the Chair of Pharmtechnology and PEM along with educational activities is engaged in the scientific and research practice. The Chair is focused on the research carried out on biomedical studies of non-protein amino acids and their peptides, as well as some potential biologically active substances. The Chair is also engaged in the realization of research in the framework of thematic financing.

In 2015 The Chair of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy was established on the basis of the Chair of Pharmaceutical Chemistry functioning since 1998 at the Faculty of Chemistry of YSU. In 2016 the Chair of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy was included in the structure of a newly established Institute of Pharmacy.

The Chair’s academic and research laboratories are installed with modern research and analytical equipment. Particularly, the Scientific-educational Laboratory for Drug Quality Control and Monitoring is equipped with necessary modern analytical appliances for the analysis of the structure of the drug substances: High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, Ionic Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC–MS), ICP-OES Spectrometer, UV 1800 Spectrophotometer, a polarimeter for determining the optical purity of the chiral drug substances, a device for determining the melting point, high-precision technical and analytical scales, etc. The Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is installed with all necessary equipment for drug quality control: solubility, fragmentation, depreciation, strength determination; and other devices.

The Chair cooperates with a number of research institutes and centers, in particular, Scientific Center of Drug and Medical Technology Expertise after academician E. Gabrielyan, Scientific and Production Center “Armbiotechnology” of NAS RA, Institute of Fine Organic Chemistry named after Mnjoyan of the Scientific Technological Center of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, etc.

The Chair is also engaged in carrying out research in the framework of basic and thematic financing. The subdepartment of “Asymmetric synthesis” is functioning under the chair, where research is performed on asymmetric biomimetic synthesis of aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic substituted optically active non-protein (S) and (R)-α-amino acids.

The Chair of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy of YSU is closely cooperating with a number of well-known foreign research centers and universities: A.N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds of RAS of the Russian Federation, Institute of Human Brain of RAS of the Russian Federation, Karolinska Institute of Sweden, Institute of Biostructures and Bioimaging of Italy, Paris-Sud University of France, Belgorod National Research University of Russia, University of Rostock in Germany, “ACROS ORGANICS” of Belgium, “Iris Biotech” of Germany, etc.

The asymmetric biomimetic synthesis of heterocycle substituted optically active non-proteinogenic (S)- and (R)-α-amino acids is the main scientific direction of the laboratory of Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is As a result of scientific works an efficient technology of asymmetric biomimetik synthesis of α-amino acids was elaborated and more than 30 novel heterocycle substituted optically active non-proteinogenic (S)- and (R)-α-amino acids were synthesized.

Quality control of drugs, biologically active additives and other preparations, authentication, analysis of drug homogeneity, depreciation, average weight, quantitative compliance, determination of ionic composition of samples, quantitative and qualitative analysis of monodisaccharides, identification of persistent organic contaminants, alcohols, fatty acids, chiral HPLC analysis, verification of the authenticity of target compounds by LC MS-IR photometric methods, analysis of the elemental composition of tailings, waters, minerals, validation of analytical methods, development of standard technical documentation are carried out at the Scientific-Educational Center for Drug Quality Control and Monitoring of YSU Institute of Pharmacy.
